This photo was taken near the North Pole in September or October of 1993.  The boat was deployed on a several week scientific mission to study the water and ice flow of the Arctic in the vicinity of the North Pole. Deployed with us were 4 civilian scientists , who with the help of the crew gathered data such as water temperatures, salinity, clarity, as well as planting several beacons and transmitters in ice flows to track movement. We surfaced nearly 20 times, usually in open water (summertime in the Arctic) and performed our experiments.  Occasionally we would moor alongside an ice flow for several hours to conduct more experiments as well as to let the crew out for a little R & R.

Pictured here are fellow members of the crew, from left to right:  Carlos Ozuna, Rob Ruppert, Steve Franks, and Zane Stearns (kneeling)
