As best as I can recall this picture was taken in the Fall
of 1994 somewhere North of Alaska.
The boat came to a halt under this spot and hovered for a bit, making preparations
for surfacing which included turning the sail planes to their vertical position.
Then, commencing a controlled rise, the boat slowly pushed its way through
the ice, coming to a rest with just the sail protruding amongst the boulders
of ice. The interesting thing that I noted at the time was that unless you
were aware of the surfacing, you would never have known that the submarine
had just punched a hole through 3 feet of ice. There was no scraping or
rumbling, just an imperceptible nudge on the boat for only an instance
that would have gone unnoticed unless you were anticipating it. |
