In the Fall of 1993, part of the mission for the USS Pargo
was to assist the civilian scientific community in a pilot program for the
exploration of the Arctic region utilizing submarines as the platform and
vehicle for the study of northern most region of the planet.
During those weeks above the Arctic circle,
the submarine surfaced several times, mostly in open water (Summer in the
Arctic), to allow the scientific crew to perform their tests and
observations. Some of the experiments required the boat to moor
along side an ice flow to allow for experiments to be conducted on the ice
itself. Along with assisting planting transmitters and taking ice
core samples, the crew took advantage of the "ice liberty" by
having barbecues, playing football, hitting a few golf balls, and
generally just enjoying the opportunity for some fresh air and stretching
their legs. Pictured: Jeff Jenkins & Brent Magurno |
